Best to get a job working for someone very experienced who is willing to take on someone to train. If you have a votech type school near you, take some classes in construction there too.

I'll tell you how I'm "into it": I bought a townhouse to live in, and I'm slowly but surely remodeling the entire thing, top to bottom. Search diynet.com and homedepot.com for basic instructions on tasks such as painting, replacing faucets, toilets, laying new floors, etc.

Ask the sales associates at Home Depot and Lowes for any question you have. They are very knowledgable and can give you good tips.

There are very few things you can't do yourself. However, I wouldn't recommend trying any serious plumbing or electrical work yourself. Sub it out, and you'll sleep better. However, installing new plumbing and lighting fixtures onto existing pipe stub-outs and junction boxes is easy, and you should do those things yourself.
